BIG-IP® v4.6 Adv Topics

This two-day course provides networking professionals with an in-depth understanding of the BIG-IP v4.6 software. The course reviews installation, configuration, management and troubleshooting, but emphasizes use of the command line interface. Lectures, demonstrations, labs and discussions will be incorporated. Students will learn about command line functions, advanced configurations, and advanced troubleshooting.

Course Description

First day topics include explanations and command line configuration of:

  • Virtual Servers
  • Health Monitors
  • Load Balancing
  • Persistence
  • IP Forwarding and Forwarding Virtual Servers
  • Network and Transparent Virtual Servers
  • Firewall Sandwiches

Second day topics include explanations, configuration and troubleshooting of advanced virtual servers including:

  • NATs and SNATs
  • Virtual Server Bounceback
  • nPath and VLAN Configurations
  • Link Controller

Additional topics include discussions concerning why some protocols are difficult to load balance and what BIG-IP can do to work around those issues.

By course completion, the student should be able to perform many advanced configurations of BIG-IP systems using either the Graphical User Interface (browser based) or command line interface. Additionally, the student should be able to monitor, administer, and perform advanced troubleshooting tasks on traffic processed through the BIG-IP system.

Audience

This course is intended for experienced users of the BIG-IP including system and network administrators responsible for its advanced functionality.

Prerequisites

Participants must have either successfully completed the BIG-IP v4.6 course, or passed the BIG-IP v4.6 Certification Exam. For more details on certification exams, see the F5 Certification page.

Participants should understand:

  • TCP/IP Addressing and Routing including:
    • The Address Resolution Protocol
    • Direct and Indirect Routing
    • TCP Handshakes
  • Command Line Configuration including:
    • Commands and Parameters
  • Command Line Access (DOS or UNIX)
  • Common elements of and differences between WAN and LAN components.

In addition, it is helpful if participants are familiar with:

  • The BSDi File System
  • pico editor or vi editor,
  • the tcpdump program, and
  • shell scripting.
