It’s time again to dig into the application services organizations are actually using to make apps faster and safer.

Of note this quarter again is a continuing rise in use of bot defense services. Security application services in general all made gains in the last quarter, on average growing 2% quarter over quarter. Surprisingly, acceleration application services saw similar gains, emphasizing a new focus on fast.

In particular, the use of SSL termination has risen to 82%. SSL termination is critical for security and routing at the application layer as it enables BIG-IP to decrypt traffic to inspect and direct.

DEFEND

BOT DEFENSE UP AGAIN

Bot defense gained 3% again over last quarter, growing from 16% to 19% of organizations employing it to defend against malicious non-human traffic.

Research from F5 Labs detailing the growth of malicious bots indicates this upward trend is likely to continue.

CONTROL & PROTECT

SECURITY GROWTH

Use of application access and web single-sign on services saw gains of 2% each, rising from 26% to 28% over the last quarter. Web security, too, rose from 25% to 27%.

Analysis from F5 Labs revealed that applications and identities were the initial targets in 86% of breaches, making these application services critical.

ACCELERATE

FOCUS ON FASTER

Web acceleration and HTTP compression services each regained previous losses, rising to 40% and 44% respectively.

Supporting the focus on speed were increases in the use of TCP-multiplexing (now at 53%) and SSL offloading (rising to 82%).
