F5 BIG-IP 7200v Shields University from Cybercrimes and Unknown Threats

TOKYO—F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV) announced today that the University of Tsukuba has installed F5 BIG-IP 7200v to bolster its security and firewall capabilities. With F5, the university reduced its dependence on numerous pieces of firewall equipment which several administrators had to manage.

“Centralization of management and security improvement were the big targets for the recent replacement,” stated Akira Sato, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Engineering University of Tsukuba Academic Computing and Communications Center, Network Group. Prior to deploying F5, each domain had its own separate DNS server; all academic divisions were required to administer and manage their own network.

The initial deployment consisted of installing BIG-IP 7200 into the pathway that handled all access from outside Tsukuba University campuses. This condensed the operations of multiple pieces of firewall equipment deployed at the network edge into a single unit. With all functions going through a unified system, policy controls and traffic management improved, while exposure to vulnerabilities was drastically reduced.

“We’d begun to see more DDoS attacks,” Dr. Sato stated. “To guard against them, we needed to ensure protection at the application level.” BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM) provides a static measure at the IP address level, and the F5 web application firewall (WAF) services within BIG-IP Application Security Manager (ASM) detect and prevent DDoS attacks closest to applications.

“Since the programmable BIG-IP platform has various security features and capabilities, there are opportunities to add functionality and intelligence to raise the level of security even higher,” said Dr. Sato.
