F5 Networks Japan GK, a subsidiary of F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV) announces its deployment of F5’s BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (BIG-IP APM) to the RIKEN national science institute.

With F5’s BIG-IP Access Policy Manager, RIKEN integrated multiple virtual private network (VPN) systems. As a result research teams can securely access any company website from a remote location with one network access method.

RIKEN operates nine major research sites throughout Japan; previously each used a unique operational system and a unique set of network configurations. Disparate connections required RIKEN employees to use different protocols which in turn added complexity to troubleshooting and new user services deployments.

RIKEN unified its VPN access methods to SSL-VPN using BIG-IP APM installed in a single site. This became the only access point for all VPN accesses outside the research perimeter. Because the site with BIG-IP APM is connected to other sites using wide-area Ethernet, users can securely connect to any RIKEN site. Secure SSL-VPN with BIG-IP APM supports a wide range of terminals with different operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android and Linux.

The unification into SSL-VPN with BIG-IP APM enables employees to start secure VPN connections by accessing the single URL from their web browsers. Unification also simplified troubleshooting. Lastly, each RIKEN site no longer needs to update its system every time an employee’s device requires an operating system update.

“The unification into Secure SSL-VPN with BIG-IP APM not only significantly enhanced user convenience but also reduced the cost for VPN operation,” stated Ken Mizoguchi of the RIKEN Advanced Center for Computing and Communication’s Yokohama Unit. “In fact, this unification into SSL-VPN with BIG-IP APM has proven to be the highest degree of hardware aggregation within the network integration project.”

RIKEN plans to continue integrating other parts of its network.
