What is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)?

SIP (session initiation protocol) is an IP telephony standard developed by the IETF to manage the creation and destruction of voice-related IP networking sessions. As voice, data, and video communications become more integrated using IP-based networks, applications will increasingly use SIP signaling technology to manage connections. A text-based protocol, it is similar to HTTP and is therefore faster and easier to implement than other IP protocols.

The F5 BIG-IP® product family provides the reliability, availability and QoS necessary for SIP-enabled networks.
