Fostering open cloud-native innovation: F5 is a Sylva-validated partner

F5 ADSP | December 31, 2025

By championing open, cloud-native innovation at the edge, telecom providers are shaping the future of global connectivity, laying the groundwork for a more agile and interoperable digital ecosystem. The Sylva Project initiative, hosted by the Linux Foundation Europe, builds on this vision as an open-source effort to create a standardized, production-grade cloud software framework for European telecom and edge computing environments.

The cloud framework developed within Sylva can be productized by telco operators, network vendors, or cloud service providers to create production-ready cloud platforms. By providing a common, secure, and scalable framework built on existing open-source components, Sylva fosters collaboration and accelerates the adoption of cloud-native technologies in networks for 5G, O-RAN, and future 6G applications.

Fostering digital innovation across Europe—and beyond

With the introduction of modernized applications and services, telecom providers face complex challenges as they race to keep pace with advances in technology. The telecom industry has evolved from vertically structured architectures to horizontally scaled designs, with services and network functions moving closer to the edge. Real-time processing of data near its source—especially at points of presence—and the need for smaller, distributed environments (rather than large, centralized data centers) continue to be key concerns.

The Sylva Project was launched by the Linux Foundation in 2022 to build a common telco cloud architecture that meets the needs of European operators but is also globally relevant. The initiative aims to create a cloud-native framework optimized for telco and edge use cases, tackling the technical hurdles inherent in the industry’s infrastructure layer. It is also focused on building a reference implementation of the cloud software framework and establishing a program to validate its deployments. By collaborating with vendors and operators, Sylva is tackling fragmentation and ensuring interoperability across the telco ecosystem.

The Sylva Project is a cloud software framework that identifies and prioritizes telco and edge requirements, cloud-native principles, and open-source collaboration opportunities. This common infrastructure can be deployed on any compliant platform, saving time and costs to both vendors and operators.

F5 BIG-IP Next Cloud-Native Functions (CNFs) has been designed from the ground up to align with Kubernetes and modern cloud principles. Unlike traditional virtual network functions (VNFs), CNFs run natively within cloud platforms, providing agility, efficiency, and dynamic scalability. For telcos, this means true alignment with cloud-native architectures, faster deployment and onboarding of network services. It also means improved reliability and automation through container orchestration, and the ability to extend networks closer to the edge, enabling 5G use cases such as ultra-low-latency applications and IoT services.

The validation by the Sylva Project demonstrates that BIG-IP Next CNFs can seamlessly integrate within a collaborative, open-source cloud stack, giving operators confidence in vendor interoperability and cloud-native performance.

The shift toward cloud native is not just about modernization; it is essential for unlocking the full potential of 5G.

By validating solutions such as BIG-IP Next CNFs in open-source projects like Sylva, the ecosystem is:

  • Reducing complexity: Deployments are simplified by ensuring that CNFs work across standard telco cloud stacks.
  • Accelerating innovation: Operators can roll out new 5G services faster, with less risk.
  • Driving ecosystem collaboration: Multiple vendors and operators can confidently come together under common frameworks.
  • Enabling the edge: CNFs support the scale and elasticity needed to extend 5G workloads to the edge, where low-latency and localized processing matter most.

Looking ahead

The validation of BIG-IP Next CNFs by the Sylva Project is more than a technical achievement—it is a signal that the industry is progressing toward an open, cloud-native future for telecom networks. For operators, this means stepping into a world where 5G services can be deployed with greater speed, agility, and efficiency. For the ecosystem, it strengthens the path toward standardization and interoperability that will define the next era of telecom innovation.

The journey toward fully cloud-native telco infrastructures is only beginning, but milestones like this bring us closer to realizing the promise of 5G at scale.
