Speaking Session:

Ransomware or Ransom-War:  Evolving Landscape of Threats in Cloud Databases

October 20, 2022
13:30 – 15:00
Presenter:  Dr. Aditya Sood, Sr. Director Threat Research and Security Strategy – Office of the CTO, F5

The attackers are targeting cloud databases used for modern applications to subvert the integrity and confidentiality of the stored data. Databases, including MongoDB, Elasticsearch, etc., are being infected with ransomware and exploited in the wild to conduct data exfiltration and data destruction. This talk will present a threat landscape of ransomware and botnet infections in the databases deployed for modern applications. The talk unveils the techniques and tactics for detecting ransomware and botnet infections in cloud databases by practically demonstrating the detection of real-world infections using developed tools. The audience can use the tools to conduct an efficient security assessment of cloud databases against severe infections. The talk equips threat researchers and penetration testers to build threat intelligence that can be consumed at a large scale. The audience will visualise real-time ransomware detection in cloud databases, including interesting insights into how these databases are compromised.

Cloud Native:  The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

October 20, 2022
13:50 – 15:00
Presenter:  Dr. Aditya Sood, Sr. Director Threat Research and Security Strategy – Office of the CTO, F5

The current understanding of Cloud Native is akin to the proverbial 'Blind Men and the Elephant', a famous Indian fable that tells the story of six blind sojourners that come across different parts of an elephant in their life journeys. In turn, each blind man creates his own version of reality from that limited experience and perspective.

Today, some refer to cloud native to specific technologies like microservices, containers, etc while others argue it is about DevOps, DevSecOps, CD/CI, etc.

The panel discussion seeks to address the following points:

  • What cloud native really is about
  • The benefits of going cloud native
  • The downsides
  • The unknowns (e.g. vulnerability security issues, etc.)

Panel:  Moving Targets in Cybersecurity; Matching Evolutions in technology with Changing User Realities

October 18, 2022
12:00 – 13:00
Presenter:  Joel Moses, CTO, Platforms and Systems & Distinguished Engineer - F5

It has become almost a cliché to speak of the impact of technology at business fora, and likewise for technologists to expound on business drivers in their field of work. In discussing organisational and business realities, as well as the cyber landscape, it is de rigueur today to hold forth with liberal usage of terms like “evolution”, “integration”, “collaborative”, “value”, “ecosystem” and the like.

The fact is that technology continues to evolve and expand at a breathless pace, across different verticals and areas of focus. Cybersecurity, now well-accepted as an inalienable pivot of any tech project, organically advances under its own steam, and is also adapting towards securing increasingly complex and demanding systems.

User realities, meanwhile, continue to be shaped by the change in myriad factors, including demographics, customer behaviour, geopolitical developments, and of course technology. From critical infrastructure through to every conceivable sector, the wheel of evolution turns remorselessly.

For cybersecurity practitioners, what are the challenges of relevance and value in this milieu of constant and systemic change? How can cybersecurity keep pace with securing the systems of today and tomorrow, and indeed how can we help define the shape of a future that is relentlessly driven by tech?
