We all give in to inertia. For years, even decades, we stay with the same banks, return to the same hair salons and buy the same brand of smartphones. Even if we aren’t fully satisfied, we fear change will require too much time and effort.

The same is true of businesses.

But in today’s volatile tech and economic environment, failing to change can be a costly mistake. Some VMware customers are finding this out. There have been reports of major price hikes following the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom. One media report flagged price hikes of 300%. Hikes like that would be more than enough to overcome inertia. Maybe that’s why many organizations are now looking to migrate their apps to an alternative platform, such as the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP).

The shift towards Nutanix

Over the past year, a broad cross-section of our client base, from major enterprises to community colleges, have begun to talk to F5 about how we can help them switch to Nutanix. Bringing together the entire data center stack, including compute, storage, networking, and virtualization, a unified hybrid cloud platform employs commodity servers with locally attached storage devices and a distributed software layer.

But economics isn’t the only driver of change.

The shifting geopolitical landscape is prompting businesses to explore how they can repatriate their apps and their data. In key sectors of Europe’s economy, such as financial services, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, for example, there is growing interest in building secure sovereign clouds that can act as a safe haven in uncertain times.

Of course, migrating workloads across virtual platforms is far from trivial. Without the right tools to maintain robust app connectivity and security across different environments, there is the danger of disruption, which could be very costly for organizations that depend on their apps and data being continuously available.

Why choose Nutanix?

But before we consider how to mitigate the risks, let’s take a closer look at why an organization would want to migrate to Nutanix. Harnessing a hybrid cloud platform is a smart move for several reasons. Crucially, it brings together the flexibility associated with the public cloud with the control associated with on-premises data centers. It achieves this by running a distributed platform on a wide variety of vendor platforms that enables enterprises to size their workloads precisely and to scale flexibly as needed.

In effect, an organization can pursue cost savings while running a state-of-the-art IT architecture within its own data centers, without the downsides of legacy infrastructure. At the same time, Nutanix also supports hybrid multicloud architectures through its Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) solution, enabling organizations to deploy and manage applications seamlessly across on-premises and multicloud environments using a unified, simplified platform.

How to make the migration as smooth as possible

While the case for Nutanix is compelling, inertia is still a factor since migrating workloads from VMware environments to Nutanix can be a complex task. That’s where F5 comes in with Nutanix ready-validated solutions with F5 BIG-IP and F5 Distributed Cloud Services. Our BIG-IP solution with Nutanix supports traffic management, load balancing, and integrated security, and is designed to ensure all your apps remain available during the migration, perform optimally, and maintain consistent security policies.

At the same time, F5 Distributed Cloud Services provides centralized control over app connectivity and security policies across hybrid and multicloud environments, making it easier to extend security policies and manage networking between Nutanix and public clouds. Together, BIG-IP and Distributed Cloud Services can help organizations migrate from VMware to Nutanix with ease.

Equally important, F5 and Nutanix can also help organizations build a performant and highly secure sovereign cloud, with all the benefits of a modern hybrid cloud platform. Don’t give in to inertia. With the help of F5, you can align costs, use state-of-the-art infrastructure, and take back control.
