Guidance on Candidate Use of AI in Job Applications and Selection at F5

Published on: 06 March 2025

At F5, we don't just talk about our culture—we live it. Our BeF5 behaviors define the core values that bring us together as F5ers and guide our actions in everything we do. One of the key principles that guide us is: "First and foremost, we do the right thing."

As an innovative technology company, we understand that many candidates are using Generative AI (GenAI) in their job applications. These guidelines outline our position on how GenAI can be appropriately used during the job application and selection process. The goal is to help you leverage these technologies effectively while staying true to your own unique experiences and abilities.

Your performance in the selection process should reflect your genuine skills and potential and GenAI should not replace the personal qualities that make you the right candidate for the role. Remember, the selection process is as much an opportunity for you to assess if the role is a good fit for you, as it is for us to evaluate your candidacy.  Using tools that does not show your true capabilities and strengths could mean you find yourself in a role that you do not like and don’t perform well in, and mean you end up job hunting again.

Here are some examples on acceptable practices to navigate the hiring process at F5 with GenAI.

Crafting your Resume  GenAI can suggest CV formats but make sure you infuse it with your individual achievements and qualifications.  Ask GenAI for a variety of layouts then choose one that suits your profile and customize it with your information and your unique accomplishments.  If you just copy and paste what ChatGPT or other tools tell you to write, you risk submitting a generic application that looks the same as everyone else’s, which won’t help you stand out from the crowd.

Assessment Preparation  GenAI can provide an overview of different types of assessment and how to approach them.  Ask AI for sample questions, then use them for practice – not for memorizing answers.

Interview Preparation  GenAI can be a valuable resource in understanding the types of questions you may be asked.  Use it as a tool for research and preparation but don’t rely on it as a crutch or you may struggle to stand out or come unstuck in an interview.  GenAI can generate mock interview questions based on a job description.  Reflect on these questions and prepare your responses based on your personal experiences.  Practice with Gen-AI generated questions for behavioral interviews.  Compare your responses with recommended approaches, then personalize them.  Seek suggestions on communication tips for interviews.

GenAI “Do’s”:

  • Use GenAI for brainstorming and organizing your ideas during preparation, but always make sure the result is personal to you.
  • Leverage for grammar and spelling checks to polish your application.
  • Check the clarity and readability of your responses with GenAI while preparing.
  • Use it as a tool to ease nerves and help you focus as you prepare for interviews.

GenAI “Don’ts”:

  • Do not use GenAI to replace your personal stories or experiences.
  • Do not use GenAI to complete assessments that are designed to evaluate your skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Do not use GenAI to formulate responses to specific application questions.
  • Do not use GenAI during interviews for any reason, including generating answers to interviewer questions.

If you have any questions regarding the use of AI during our hiring process, please discuss this with your F5 recruiter contact.  If you violate these guidelines, F5 reserves the right to remove your application from consideration for the position.
