Everest Group Report: Current Trends and Future Prospects in Industry Adoption of GenAI

F5 ADSP | June 18, 2024

We were delighted to make a significant contribution to a pivotal new report by the Everest Group, the leading global research group. The report, titled Generative AI Adoption – Examining Real-world Use in Horizontal Functions and Future Outlook, provides an in-depth analysis of generative AI (GenAI) adoption across industry sectors. According to the report, IT and security teams are leading the charge in integrating GenAI into business functions, with financial services organizations at the forefront among vertical industries.

The advent of ChatGPT has sparked considerable interest among business leaders, who see GenAI as a potential game-changer for productivity and operational efficiency. However, as initial enthusiasm wanes, executives are scrutinizing whether GenAI can deliver on its promises and how to effectively gauge its success. Everest Group’s report highlights several obstacles that Chief Information Officers (CIOs) face in adopting GenAI: Ambiguity in defining success metrics; financial constraints; the rapidly evolving technology landscape; concerns about data security and privacy; and a shortage of skilled talent. To navigate these challenges, business leaders must focus on identifying and investing in use cases that drive adoption and deliver cost and time savings.

Industries leading in GenAI adoption include financial services, pharmaceuticals, and retail. Financial services utilize GenAI for fraud detection and management and personalized financial advice, while pharmaceutical companies focus on drug discovery, development, and protein structure predictions. In retail, GenAI is employed for personalized marketing, promotional activities, and supply chain and inventory management. In the HR domain, talent acquisition emerges as the top use case, followed by employee onboarding, learning and development, and HR operations. Legal teams primarily use GenAI for document review and analysis, drafting legal documents, compliance and regulatory monitoring, and legal chatbots and virtual assistants.

Key findings from the report reveal notable trends in GenAI adoption across business functions. There are high adoption rates in IT departments (51%) and security teams (15%), followed by legal (14%) and HR (11%). In IT, GenAI is primarily used for automated code generation and debugging, enhanced cybersecurity, virtual assistance and support, and software testing and quality assurance. Security teams leverage GenAI for threat detection and response, phishing detection and prevention, anomaly detection, and AI security chatbots.

F5’s solutions (previously CalypsoAI) for AI runtime security and orchestration support enterprises in deploying multiple large language models (LLMs) across all business functions, ensuring seamless integration, enhanced security, and scalable AI solutions. Our extensive experience across industries has resulted in valuable data and numerous use cases, which informed the Everest Group research. The report underscores the potential of GenAI, especially when combined with a secure AI orchestration platform, to improve labor productivity and mitigate burnout. The Everest Group’s report, powered by F5’s data, provides a comprehensive overview of GenAI adoption trends and future prospects. As businesses continue to explore the potential of GenAI, focusing on strategic use cases and overcoming adoption challenges will be key to realizing its full benefits.
