Malware is an umbrella term for any type of malicious software code that is intended to damage a system; extort, spy on, or steal data from a user; or enable unauthorized access to a network. The code, often downloaded unknowingly by a user, can include anything from viruses, worms, or Trojan horses to ransomware, spyware, keyloggers, or adware.

The healthcare industry remains a favorite target of attackers—notably by targeting vulnerabilities and compromised credentials in ransomware campaigns.
